GSM stands for grams per square meter and refers to the weight of paper. It is measured by cutting the specific paper type into a square, with each side measuring a meter long, and weighing it. So the higher the number, the heavier the paper and therefore the thicker it will be. For example, a 60gsm piece of paper will be lighter, and therefore much thinner, than a 200gsm piece of paper.
Be careful though, the gsm is referring to the thickness and weight of the paper, not the size. So you may think that 200gsm paper in a meter square is fine, but turn that into an A1 poster and it becomes a bit more difficult to handle.
Does the paper GSM really make a difference?
The short answer, yes.
It entirely depends on what you will use your paper for. For example, a business card needs to feel like card; strong, sturdy, and durable. So, it must have a higher gsm. On the other hand, a leaflet or poster needs to be easily transported, handed out, or rolled up. Therefore, you will want a lower gsm so that the paper is more malleable.
By knowing the different GSM types, you will be able to determine which paper type you will need for your paper products in the future. You don’t want to order business cards that will tear or wilt in someone’s hand. Nor do you want a leaflet so thick that it is difficult to fold away.
What GSM should I be using?
Again, it depends on what you are printing. GSM paper types range from 35 gsm all the way up to 700 gsm. They are all great when used properly for the right product. Check out the infographic below to get a better idea of what paper thickness you should be using for which products.
